Birds & Bees … and other stuff

Recently, I had the opportunity to spend a week at the home of some friends who live in the countryside of Eastern Ontario. During one of my days there, I walked around the property with my camera and telephoto lens and was able to take photos of some busy bees and hummingbirds, as well as some flowers that I liked, a few dragonflies, one of my favourite members of the insect world and some butterflies and a ladybug.

I also came across this flower. I have no idea what it is, but the shape made me wonder if it originated on the Muppet Show.

The Birds, Bees & Wakefield Covered Bridge

I recently visited a good friend at her home north of Gatineau, Québec, with the sole purpose of parking myself and my camera on her porch to see if I could capture a photo of a hummingbird feeding. This was my second attempt at trying to photograph a hummingbird, and with a few tricks I learned, the results improved. However, I still have a long way to go … need to learn some more tricks of the trade.

On the way back home, I decided to take a look at the covered bridge and Gatineau River just outside the town of Wakefield, Québec.

And while there, I came across this cute wee critter …

New Brunswick – Days 1 & 2

I arrived yesterday, August 8, at the St Martins Country Inn in the town of St Martins, New Brunswick. I will be here for the next week attending a photography course given by Freeman Patterson and André Gallant. I used yesterday afternoon and most of today exploring the area and taking photos. First stop, yesterday, was the beach just on the eastern edge of the town of St Martins. And by coincidence, I arrived there during the low tide. Given that St Martins is on Fundy Bay, there is a huge difference between low and high tide.

And today I explored the Fundy Trail by car and on foot. I parked at one of the parking lots near the entrance, and from there I hiked on one of the trails to Melvin Beach. I was keeping an eye on the clock so that I could arrive just before the end of the low tide. Yesterday at the St Martins beach I was amazed at how quickly the tide came in and I came a wee bit too close to experiencing the Atlantic Ocean around my ankles.

After the hike, I stopped in at the interpretive centre for something to drink, and while relaxing outside I was entertained by these cuties.

Unitarian Memorial Garden, Ottawa

I wanted to take some photos of bees at the Unitarian Memorial Garden in Ottawa, so I headed over there early one morning before the heat set in. It wasn’t early enough – I suspect that all the bees found themselves an air conditioned hive. So it wouldn’t be a complete loss, I took photos of some of the flowers and the few insects who did show up for my photo shoot.

I also came across this beautiful, friendly Siamese cat, who appeared to be doing a bit of hunting.
