This week’s photos are brought to you by the letter “L”, for “Leaf”.
(Weekly Photo – Week #12, March 19, 2014)
Of course, I am referring to the leaves on trees, and not the pages of a book.
I am not sure why, but I just think that leaves are neat. Just think about the neat things they do for the plant, bush or tree they belong to …
- They are the energy converter, turning sunlight, water and CO2 into carbohydrates such as starch and sugar,
- They provide shade and shelter to the lower parts of the plant, and
- They help cool the plant through water evaporation.
… and they do this more than 100 times more efficiently than the root system. Not bad for these relatively delicate living things. And after they fall off the plant, they provide nourishment to the earth as they decompose.
Leaves are with us all year round, even in the winter, and although the fall leaves look wonderful, there is also beauty in a leaf trapped in the ice, laying on the snow or hanging with tenacity to a branch while everything around them is frozen.
